I tried 5" wool pads on my PE-8

It got very hot, very quickly on speed 2.

I am convinced that the machine will fail quickly if you use pads that are larger than the recommended 3".

I'm considering to use it primarily for headlights restorations, do you think I'll be all set with the PE8? I'll be using 3" sandpaper discs.

yeah I don't think the pe-8 is meant for pads larger than 4 inches. The flex 3 inch pads are tapered so the contact area is closer to 4 inches. As far as sanding I think you would need to use a DA for that or by hand, I haven't used a rotary for sanding.
