How To Remove Rupes Polisher's Factory Backing Plate Bolt

Do you have a Rupes 21ES polisher and you want to switch out your factory 6" BP to the 5" BP? Or do you have a Rupes 15ES and just want to replace the BP? But wait there's a problem... How in the world do you get that tight-a$$ factory bolt out?!?! Not unless you have big guns like Mark, this bolt is so hard to remove!!!

I thought I was extremely weak for not being able to remove it myself but someone PM'ed me who experienced the same problem. So there might be more people experiencing this. Therefore I decided I would like to share how I removed that tight factory installed bolt holding the backing plate.

The leverage from the allen key provided by Rupes wasn't enough. So I used this set of pliers:

I just clamped on the allen key sitting horizontally increasing the leverage on the allen key. Just twist it and viola!!! It will come off.

Here are other types of pliers you can use:

    Hope this helps!!!

Weird, mine was easily removed with just the provided allen key.

The first question that comes to mind is why this bolt is installed so tightly at the factory?

This thread has made me feel so much better. I ended up using the closed end of a wrench for more leverage. That bolt is excessively tight from the manufacturer.

Did anyone notice a thread lock compound on the bolt once it was removed?
