    1967 Shelby GT500 Concours prep

I've waited a little while to post this as the concours was this past week and was asked to keep the photos private until then. This Shelby finished its initial restoration about 18 months ago. After being driven around a bit for a summer, the owner decided he wanted to show it at the SAAC concours. Fast forward nearly a year, and it has undergone some additional changes, primarily related to installing OE parts, top end repros and swirls. I was asked to address the exterior, under carriage, engine bay, jambs and any other items I had time for. In total this was 34 hours.

My initial intent was to review the SAAC scorecard and judging manual, unfortunately neither were readily available at the time of the work. I performed the work at the shop that did the restoration (interior was still on-going), and as luck would have it, the gentleman doing the restoration was instrumental in developing the judging manual, scorecards and selecting the pool of judges in years past. A very convenient resource.

When I arrived the interior was dismantled as well as the trunk and rear valence and the paint condition was less than satisfactory for the date the car had. Swirls, compound residue, chips, burn-throughs, a few expected leaks (holly carbs, axle grease and transmission through bolt), and quite a bit of dust and dirt.

    Process
Hybrid rinseless wash with UWW and ONR
Decon with clay magic blue and ONR
Steam and D114 to remove compound residue
3401 with blue hybrid wool & HD cut for compounding
3401 with white hybrid pads & HD polish for polishing
Many tight spots were done with the PE-8 and various flex foam pads and the same HD liquids
Brightwork was done with Werkstatt Prime Strong
Finished with Son1cwax Breast in Show
Undercarriage was cleaned with steam & D114
Engine was done with D114, distilled water via tornador & Steam
Glass was with a fast glass towel and distilled water

    Initial Condition

Some of the only direct comparison shots I got

Compound splatter in the trunk on the soundproofing and overspray, heavy texture on this stuff

After steam, D114 and a stiff brush

    Typical of the entire vehicle

Really tight space, the PE8 was a blessing

    Finished shots

You're gonna lose points. It's better than new.

    Beautiful work

Thanks. And very true, probably lost a few post on authenticity, but gained them back on workmanship.

He did go home with a gold award in division 2 (highest div 2 award). And the concours chair asked him back for a division 1 premier award (highest award obtainable)
