DA usage question
Hi all, first time posting after lurking for a long time. I am trying to learn all I can, and I recently clayed our 2008 Town and Country minivan (it's a minivan, but got to keep it looking nice!). Couldn't believe the difference it made!
I have a sanding project coming up in our dining room (more on that in a minute, but basically I've put all new trim up in the dining room and kitchen).
I've been reading about DA's, and would like to purchase one. But, it's occurred to me that these are just "re-purposed" sanders used in finish carpentry work, correct? If so, would it work to purchase the Porter Cable DA (or an equivalent), use it the one time I need to it to do some sanding in the house, and than covert it to use for the car with the proper pads?
I'd really like to kill two birds with one stone. Will this work?
Thanks!

Re: DA usage question
you could use it to do sanding with the appropriate discs, but not really for trim (maybe the ends?).
Sanding down a table top, no problem, sanding an intricate pedestal for the table... not so much
but by all means, tell your wife the purchase is to work on stuff around the house. The fact that you can use it on your car is just an added bonus
I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.

Thanks. How did you know my wife factored in the decision!
The reason I think it would work on the trim is the trim is flat (craftsman style), so there is really no detail. Just flat pine and poplar. But there is a lot of it and it has to be sanded anyway. But I really just want it for the car.

Re: DA usage question
When my DA isn't rubbing cars, I hire myself out restoring and polishing faux marble countertops and cultured pearl bathroom vanities. I use the Velcro backed super flat wet/dry sanding disks available at the auto parts stores to remove as many of the defects as possible graduating from 600, 1000, 1500 and finally 2500 grit disks then polish using the same products/pads I use on vehicles to finish it up. They turn out stunning every time!
