Need a lesson on single stage paint
I'm looking to get the to get this "scheme" painted on my Challenger only in black instead of purple. I'm currently getting quotes and so far two shops are suggesting a "PPG" Single stage
gloss black paint instead of a base coat clear coat to avoid high paint ridges?? Would this paint finish out to a gloss comparable to a clear coated factory paint? Any tips, advice or input
welcome. Thank you

That sounds like an easy and less expensive way out
I thought they would add the graphics and then re-clear the entire car?

Re: Need a lesson on single stage paint
I have shot single stage Urethane many times and the gloss is as good as any.
It probably lasts longer than any other automotive paint that I have ever used.
Some shops are still using Acrylic with hardener. It's cheaper and looks good but does not last as long as Urethane.
I don't paint anymore but a friend and I saw a truck that we painted with Urethane about 15 years ago and except for rust holes in some panels the paint looked really good. We couldn't believe it lasted so long.

Single stage will finish out very shiny and last very well. I've had issues with cheap acrylic enamels being soft and contaminates causing damage.
Single stage absolutely has a different look than something that is cleared.
On your car I wouldn't worry about it having a different gloss type especially since billboard stripes are usually satin finish.

Thanks for the replies. I am removing the stripes before the paint. I want to wet sand it. Should I ask about "extra" paint?

I remember in a class with Mike at AG he mentioned to us when custom paint a car is always good to have an extra coat of paint and or clear as well if that will be the case so you know you have extra material to compound, polish etc without cutting the paint to low... I will do it if I was you bro!!!!

Thank you for the reply. I'm going to have to ask for that
