Solekeeper, if you are in the LA area, Art (Hernandez) also grew up in his family's body shop and has lots of sanding experience, he's a great forum member and always willing to help (sorry Art if I just threw you under the bus).

Why not sand with 3000 after the 2000 phase. That will certainly help.

setec, i'm in south florida :x
eric, we don't feel like we need to reduction sand. It would honestly be a waste of time. For me as a painter, our orange peel is almost spot on. We simply use 2k for minor removal, and 1500 to take out dirt nibs.

Get yourself some 3M Unigrit 3k sandpaper.
It will quickly remove your sanding marks.
Follow up with the HD.
Works every time for me.

Well if you can't get out the sanding marks using a rotary and wool pad then IMO you only have two things you can try.
3k paper or, Meguiars 105.
I've never tried any HD products but have used 105 many times and it works.

Re: Wetsanding with 2k grit
There's a couple of local hotrodders coming to Autogeek this Thursday night and I'm going to show them how to machine wetsand and then use a rotary buffer to remove their sanding marks.
Feel free to join us....

We might even end up doing some sanding on this old Plymouth....
Also, M100 is a very fast cutting compound wit a wool pad on a rotary buffer and finishes out very nice. A lot more user friendly than M105
I used it on this old 2-door Chevy....

Re: Wetsanding with 2k grit
coming from using HD products and was totally disapointed with there products I moved to a real cutting compound called Presta Cutting Cream, it cut's right through the 2000 grit scratches and leaves a great finish, it dusts a tad but not as much as m105, it does require a follow up product but does a great job
