Since you're just trying to blend the different visual appearances together so there's less of a stark contrast, sanding and buffing should work pretty well.
I'd say stick to the #3000 and if you have #4000 (Mirka Abralon?), then finish out with it and then compound and polish.

Thank you for the reply. I will definitely do wet sanding by hand. But I just picked up 3000 grit. Hopefully it will do the trick. Thanks for the advice!
