Wheels embedded with rust bits

I doubt the Sonax Wheel Cleaner will make much of a difference... I'd give TW Chrome Polish & Rust Remover a shot at those wheels. There's not much to to lose.

Well just used half of the Sonax bottle and it did cut most of it off but the rest is very difficult to get. It would be unrealistic to keep trying with it. Any tips from here? Perhaps that Tuttle wax rust remover might be a go?

I think a Magic Eraser lubed with some diluted APC would work.

Since that appears to be a painted wheel, I'm not sure that would be a good idea. Wouldn't even 0000 steel wool tear up the clear coat and/or the paint underneath?

First take the wheels off the car and lay them flat so when you are working on them everything does not run to the bottom.

I don't like Sonax or Iron-X because they don't clean that well on un coated wheels. Try Dodo Juice Ferrous Dueller Iron Remover as it is the strongest I have found.

I put a crap towel under the rim and spray the wheels down and scrub them as soon and you are done spraying them.
Next I use that towel under them rim and a few other old ones and lay them on top of the problem areas and give them an extra squirt or two
This helps the cleaner stay where you need it to work and not run away.

You have the right process just keep doing the same process over and over and everything will come off eventually.

When they are clean just polish them and seal them with Gyeon Rim.

Don't use steel wool on painted surfaces, including clearcoated wheels.

I will order some then! I saw somebody on YouTube using a plastic thin card to get these embedded bits off but that would scratch big time. Thank you!

I had a similar issue with an old honda accord, the iron actually baked into the wheel had some successfull with steam cleaner and meguiars wheel brightener on the strongest dilution. Not saying to go out and buy brightener but maybe some steam would help amplify the product also since shes are so heavily etched it mightve gone through the clear and into the wheel thus when removing it it will look dull and brownish.

I picked up a bottle the TW chrome polish/rust remover that Eldo recommended to try out. This stuff is pretty good at removing the stains that your typical wheel cleaner won't remove.

I usually use Optimum Poli-Seal to clean them up but I think this works just as well, maybe a little better. I think it may have some abrasives in it but I'm not positive. If there are any, they are very mild.

Nowhere near as bad as what you're dealing with but here are some pics.










Then for the fun of it I decided to see what it would do to the area of the barrel just between the spokes.



After two applications



Then after about 5 apps.



Definitely not just a wipe on/wipe off, it takes some working it with some pressure.

For the light staining in the first few pics, it only took one go at it.
