Tape marks left in paint after buffing test spot......

I had my 64 Galaxie repainted about a year ago and I haven't sealed the paint just yet. I have a dark metallic blue paint job and there were some light holograms left on the car from the body shop. I wanted rid of the holograms ,so I taped off a test spot just like Mike taught us, buffed the test area, and when I went to pull the tape off (at an angle), and wiped the compound off, you could see the line where the tape was and it could not be wiped off ! It was not a sticky residue, but it was more like it embedded in the clear coat. So I re-buffed the tape area and the tape line disappeared. I had a really sick feeling in my stomach for a minute there....the paint job was not cheap......I used 3M blue painters tape.

Why would the tape leave a mark in the clear ???

    Thanks,
    Red

I have seen this before when tape designed to seal for crisp lines, i.e. Frog tape and the 3 M tape with the gold lettering on inner cardboard. These tapes swell to minimize color bleeding when going between 2 colors
I have also seen where people buff onto the tape and it heats up and "melts" the glue, either way I'm glad you took care of the issue!

As beginner, I would buff over the tape and as you said , heat the glue up or roll the tape up a bit with the buffer. After buffing , I would have little spots of tape residue sticking to the cars finish, and that is hard to get off also......Live and learn ! Thanks for the tape info Vobro !

Thanks for posting that Mike, I was really sweating there for a while when I saw the tape line..... I have never had trouble before when taping off areas working on my other vehicles, or on recently painted cars.
I have buffed over tape lines in the past, but I've never had tape actually leave a mark in the finish......
Thanks again Mike, you and this forum are the best !

Sorry to hear of your mishap....

Scary thing is... there's been a few times where I have not been able to remove the line 100% even with wetsanding.

Not sure how this happens but it taught me a lesson and that's why I wrote this article. To help others avoid my mistakes.

    Also just by coincidence....

I had a 1964 Ford Galaxie in the garage today with the ORIGINAL black paint.

I'll post some pics tomorrow and share what we did to her...

I'd love to see what the car looked like before and after , especially with the original paint.

    Thanks,
    Red
