    Re: Wheel Wednesday!

While I had the spare tyre off to polish the rear door, I thought I'd do a weight comparison between the AM steel and OE alloy. They do have different sized tyres, but they are the same brand.

    AM steel - 17 X 8
    Tyre - Yokohama G015 285-65/17 116H
    Wt: 34.1kg - 75lb

    OE alloy - 17 X 7.5
    Tyre - Yokohama G015 LT 265-70/17 121S
    Wt: 34.7kg - 76.5lb

I guess the LT tyre on the alloy must be heavier than the other tyre, despite the other tyre being wider. They have the same rolling diameter. The wider tyre definitely has better grip, and is quieter, it also looks better, but has worn out quicker. I was told to get the wider rubber I needed a wider rim, but I've since been told the 7.5" alloy would have been fine for a 285 tyre. It's not like anyone buys an FJ Cruiser for its cornering ability.

    Re: Wheel Wednesday!

It's funny what you discover about wheel and tire package weights when you actually put them on a scale.

Last year I got a set of wheels and tires for autocross. I spent a lot of time hunting down the lightest wheels I could afford, but didn't think much about tire weight. First time I swapped the wheels, I put them on a scale only to find out both sets were roughly the same weight. The wheels were smaller and much lighter, but the 200TW tires with their track-duty sidewalls were much heavier.

Mounted and balanced these yesterday (Wednesday) at work -

For a friend of the shop’s ‘21 Shelby GT500. Wheel and tire set that cost more than I paid for my car…
He made a point to mention (more than once) that the wheels are $4k apiece. He wasn’t doing it to be flashy, he was just that concerned about them getting damaged. Apparently his normal ford dealer wouldn’t even touch them. (Shows the faith they have in their techs?)

If I had $4K carbon fiber wheels, I wouldn't trust a dealer either! I'd be sure to take them to someone with the best tire mounting equipment and someone I trusted operating it.

Did you let some air out of them for storage time?

I just noticed the car collection on the wall, nice setup, do you have a particular preference, or is it any you find interesting?

    Re: Wheel Wednesday!

Only the wheels left to do after working on the paint last week.

I wiped them over with Bowden's Orange Agent first, one spot required some steel wool and WD40 where some surface rust was showing in the gap between the rim and wheel face.

Then I went over them with Mother's Carnauba Cleaner Wax on a foam ball on my little 12V cordless drill, used to batteries to do all 4 wheels, but much easier than doing it by hand.

Next I gave the tyres a very light spray with Meg's Hyper Dressing to make them look a little darker.

Finished off by wiping the wheels over with TWHS Ceramic Wet Wax, for some added protection.

    Re: Wheel Wednesday!

Having washed these last weekend, it's only fitting to make this week's post on the 21-inch 5-Double Spoke Black Diamond wheels on my sisters Volvo XC60 B6.

I really love the machined face set against the painted inner spokes. Cleaning wise, these wheels have a weird ledge that runs behind the spokes, which necessitates the need for a small wash mitt to get them properly clean behind the spokes and that ledge. The brake pads are also the typical euro dusty. This is basically the only car that I clean regularly that needs an iron remover wheel cleaner, which I use as a pre-treatment before contact washing with either foamed Brake Buster or soap. These Pirelli tyres are also receptive of different dressings, anything I put on them seems to look great.
