Believe it or not...that's not far from the truth. A friend almost had them coat his Corvette because they told him it would prevent rock chips

Thankyou, in the end i was paid for the service so i cant complain to much. Some are not as anal about vehicles as us folk. We are not normal haha

Did your friend say how often he would run it through the touchless wash? Like once a week, twice a month, once a month?
If he ran it through the touchless on a frequent basis, at least he is keeping the paint free from surface contaminants which would otherwise slowly eat away at the coating. If that's the case then I wonder if the constant exposure to high pH soaps at these auto car washes is what really killed the coating?
