You will be fine buffing it with a compound. The polyurethane finish is pretty tough. I have buffed out a lot of conference tables at work with a Makita and some 3M.
I use them. The yellow ones from Costco.
They work great for cleaning inside. Just wash them a couple of times first. Mine would leave yellow lint behind until I laundered them.
