I'm kind of in the same boat...I sold my Dewalt and bought a 3401. However, I "feel" as if I need one, rather than actually needing it. Most of the time customers love the correction I'm able to...

I find that my 3401 is much better with a LC foam pad...as far as vibration and control. I use the Optimum MF pads, but feel that the machine vibrates right through them. I love the pads...

6.5" is as high as I have gone, and it has the "juice" to move mine. As far as personal preferance is concerned, I use 5.5" on most cars. I like the feel of the smaller pad, but that is just me.
