Yes I tried to use BFWW as a rinseless wash.
I used it at 1:256 it worked OK.
Not as slick as some best rinseless wash out there, but the paint finish is good.

1oz to 3 gallons is the official recommendation from PFC, so your trade partner didnt make a mistake.
Just the product doesnt work well at this official ratio.

the only iron remover that can be diluted to my knowledge is Mitchell and King Exile / Rim.
