First, thanks to rwright for sending me out a sample of the product to give it a try.
My only previous experience with rinseless washes has been limited to ONR v2. Aside from it not releasing dirt out of the wash media I have liked how well it performs. But washing with a mitt that continually looks dirtier and dirtier as you go around a car isn't exactly confidence building (I considered doing a side-by-side comparison, but that's not applicable with the intro of ONR v3).
Enter Megs D114 which apparently has found a way around that problem. I'll just say first that this product really impressed me. I'll add more thoughts after the pics, but needless to say I will definitely be purchasing this product with my next order. I gave the D114 a try on my gf's 2001 Honda Civic. I will make the disclaimer that I have treated her car with Opticoat 2.0, so it does already release dirt fairly easily. The car had the usual amount of dirt on it after a week of commuting in the off and on PNW rain.
On to some pictures (cell phone, so may be lacking a little detail).
I decided to first try the D114 at the 1 ounce/1 gallon ratio as the car had a decent amount of dirt on it on the lower panels and rear bumper. Here's a shot of one gallon mixed up by adding the D114 after filling a bucket with water. The Megs mf wash mitt is about 2 years old and is my backup. That's what it looks like dry and clean.
However, if you like a sudsy mix you can get some serious bubbles with this stuff! Here's another 1 gallon mixture where I purposefully foamed it up under the tap (the blue in the middle of the foam is just a little extra D114 that I shook out of the cap).
Dirt on the rear bumper. Camera doesn't pick it up as well as in person.
Here's a shot of the mitt after washing a lower door panel.
And here's a shot of the mitt after rinsing it out after washing said door panel.
Washing completed, mitt rinsed out, and a bucket full of dirty water.
Pros
Cons
- Releases dirt from wash media amazingly well! This is seen not only in how clean the wash media rinses, but also in how much less dirt "sticks" with the media after washing a panel. Super happy about that!
- Pleasant smell - reminds me of some type of Kool-Aid
- Foams up, which I liked seeing as it kinda made me feel like I'm still doing a normal wash on the car. Just a mental thing I guess.
- 1 oz per gallon for heavier dirt really works well.
- Leaves behind a clean, bare finish ready for any LSP or spray product.
Final Thoughts
- Compared to ONR, the Megs D114 seems to sit on the panel after washing and not roll off very well. This increased the effort for drying each panel. I'd say I used twice as many mf towels to dry as I would using ONR.
I was really impressed with Megs D114. I can't comment on ONR v3, but with how well D114 released dirt from the wash media I will definitely be buying it. When using it you see the same slick sheen to the wash as ONR has as you go over each panel, and the more aggressive mixture really breaks dirt down quickly.
One other thing that really impressed me was how far the mixture went when washing the car. I only mixed up one gallon of wash (one oz of D114) and was able to wash every panel on the car except the front bumper. Had I known/realized how long it could be safely used prior to rinsing out the wash mitt I could have definitely washed the entire car using only one gallon of wash at the more aggressive mix ratio. Incredible! Could the Opticoat have aided in this? Maybe. But the car was definitely dirty and even with that factor I'm no less impressed. With how far I was able to get using 1 gallon of wash it seems this stuff is going to be very cost effective, and knowing that I probably wouldn't even bother watering it down to a 2 gallon mixture.
I'm not sure if Megs has any plans to announce other uses/mixtures for this product, but with how well it releases dirt I would consider using the 1 oz to 1 gallon mixture (or stronger assuming that wouldn't strip off LSP's) as a spray for a pre-wash soak.
