Re: Sneak Peek! - New Polisher!
Mike also used 5" pads. Makita comes with a 5" plate. Now, we just need confirmation it's the Makita.

I Think I actually understand why they went with a 5mm Throw instead of 8mm.
With the 8mm throw the Flex 3401 lacks (compared to long throws) in OPMS, This is where the free spinning long throws excel at is OPMS. Being that the 3401 is gear driven it has to travel 8mm and it can only do that so fast. the larger the orbit the less OPMS for a gear driven machine.
Someone posted the specs on Facebook that the Rupes forced rotation does have more OPMS than the 3401. And that makes sense due to the 5mm throw. the 5mm has to travel less distance than 8mm, Accomplishing more OPMS.
Maybe Rupes found a happy medium between Forced Roation and Long-Throw?
Let's just say I for one am excited to try it.

Is this for the Rupes or Makita?

Makes sense, Joe. Good stuff. I'm excited as well.

Re: Sneak Peek! - New Polisher!
Nice one from Rupes. I am sure it will be a quality machine.
There are actually already quite a number of gear action orbital polisher from Japan since many years back with similar orbit diameter and I am sure the concept is pretty much the same even though the design is different. In fact I would prefer it to be 3mm-5.5mm orbit diameter for higher precision polishing for curves and edges. For larger orbit polisher, the abrasive rubbed in will never be as even and consistent on curves and edges even if the user can maintain its rotation. Torque and pressure can easily compensate speed of correction for larger orbital size but not vice versa as practically there is only a limit to how wide the orbit size could go and the larger it goes, the less precision it becomes.
Having said that, I am more curious to see the system (polish/pad) Rupes design for this polisher. Hope to see Wool Cutting pad with 5mm-8mm foam backing and 8mm to 15mm foam pad.

so in a sense it's almost like the 15mm/21mm long throw vs. 8mm DA?

Smaller orbit, higher rotation?
On the Marita 9237 I rarely go past 3, but none of my other tools seem to come near that amount of action.
Just a couple hours ago, while using the 9237, I was imagining a forced rotation orbital with even a 3mm offset, and higher rotations.
I really enjoy using the rotary, and I see myself using it more and more. The current plan was to get another 3401, but if either of the new Makita, or Rupes tools give faster rotation, I may go that route.
