It's the angle of the photos, that's all. The mitt Mike used was out of the same box as the rest of our stock.

I'd say "yes".
The thing is anytime you rub anything against scratch-sensitive clearcoats paints there's going to be a marring issue. This includes using detailing clay. Heck this includes using a tatty wash mitt...
For the most part, my rule of thumb for my own vehicles is that anytime I'm going to do any type of mechanical decontamination I'm already planning on doing at least ONE form of machine polishing.
For example, I recently washed my truck and used the Griot's Fast Surface Prep Mitt after thoroughly washing and rinsing the paint. Afterwards I machine waxed the paint using a FLEX 3401 with a white 6.5" LC Hybrid foam polishing pad and McKee's 37 360 cleaner/wax.
Any marring was removed by the machine applied cleaner/wax.
For the wife's car I keep a coating on it and it gets more complicated to address bonded contaminants on coated paint if you factor in doing a machine polishing process because now you're go either re-applying the coating or a guessing game.
