Need input please.. PC 7424 problems
I picked up a brand new 7424 a few years ago. I can count on 2 hands how many times its been used. Thing looks brand new. I've noticed the last couple times I've used it. That I can not start it on the car. It has to be really high RPM's and no pressure at all on the pad or it won't start to spin while in contact. Any ideas whats going on? If its toast. Probably will just be easier to spend the $120 and get a brand new XP or upgrade to a flex or another brand. Except I already have brand new pads for the PC.

Did the washer get installed with backing plate? It comes in the box and is not mentioned in the manual I think.

The washer comes with the original pad that comes with it. At least in my packaging...

FWIW, Many ACE hardware stores around here are certified repair centers for Porter-Cable. I take my old PC in every couple years for lube and brush replacement. My 7424 is over 18 years old and has seen over a thousand cars and still get the job done. It likely will outlast me, LOL.

But knowing you can get a new PC for $120, does repaiting it seem like a waste of money?

I had the same issue with my one year old PC. Got a Harbor Freight, for less money, and it works much better than my PC.
You could try smaller pads. Also, the pads you have should work on another DA. They usually aren't PC specific.

I actually switched to 5.5" pads. Like them much better. Its really only the backing plate I would have to change? Or only if I go to a Flex would they not work?

The backing plates off you PC will not fit a Flex 3401. As for your pads they are not machine dependent. As long as the pads size match the backing plate size you are good to go.
