It depends on how technical you want to get regarding the outcome of the paint after using either product. Technically speaking, an abrasive polish will remove previously applied waxes and sealants, providing a clean slate for your new coat of wax or sealant. However, a chemical paint cleaner, such as Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion, will do a better job "cleaning" the paint. When I say cleaning, I'm referring to the chemical cleaners that will remove below surface contaminants.

Is it necessary to use both? No. But keep in mind cars only have so much paint so unless you need to use something abrasive, stick with the least aggressive approach, which in this case would be Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion.

Ok here is my treaded scratch taken at 3 diff angles. As you can see the "smear" travels up the scratch. I guess it could be trapped lotion. Like a finger smear on a smart phone screen.

I went ahead and ordered a bottle of this product to use on my wifes new Camry. If I like it, I'll apply it to my Z06. I'll be sure to post up a mini review with my take on the product.

Wash with Dawn and/or use properly diluted IPA to completely strip the panel. Check for swirls/holograms and then take the necessary steps (swirl remover, dual action polisher, etc) to remove them. Once the paint is corrected, apply your wax or sealant of choice. Later down the road when it's time to reapply a wax or sealant, use the Cleansing Lotion first and make sure you apply it sparingly.

Some vehicles it will while others it won't. I'd play it safe and tape off any trim.

Re: Lets discuss Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion

Thank you Nick & Mike! That's a bit more work than I want to do (I'm not a pro). I have a new 2012 pearl white Nissan Leaf. The paint looks good and feels pretty clean, but there was alot of grit on it when I first got it a few weeks ago. I've already purchased the Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint sealant and Liquid Souveran. I will clay the finish. Can you recommend a prewax cleansing polish that won't discolor black trim? XMT 360?

Thanks for the great forum and website!

    XMT 360 is a one step cleaner/wax, not a pre-wax cleaner.

One thing I've been recommending for years that just makes common sense is to...

    s-l-o-w d-o-w-n...

That is slow down and focus on the task at hand and simply don't run your applicator pad over any trim in the first place. You can simply work the paint cleaner close to the trim but not onto it.

Most pre-wax cleaners or paint cleaners are easy to use and if you get any on trim then immediately wipe it off.
