I would say, "it depends". In a mild climate where the wheels are frequently washed, I'd agree you could probably get by with just soap. However, I noticed this winter after weeks of salt, grime, and heavy German car performance brake pad dust a mild wheel cleaner barely worked on the coated wheels. The gunk was starting to harden. I seriously doubt a normal car soap would have cleaned as easily or completely as a good wheel cleaner.

^ even now, wash water gets them mostly clean. But as you point out, in NJ the wheels see a wide temp range, salt, and the car in question is a BMW X5.
