Re: VW Scandal
Remington model 700, was a self (no intervention), shooting rifle, which killed many. The designer told mgt. & proposed a $0.10 per gun fix. Then the company dragged it's feet & said it was safe. Lobbyist have made, the gun industry albeit all but exempt from product liability. This comes down to who the public elects, people don't read position papers, or ballots, what get's folks elected is blind loyalty, for a team.

VW...
being embroiled in some "scandal"?
Hasn't that always been part-and-parcel
of its illustrious history?

Bob - A Tad unfair, this could be said/claimed by anyone, with a history. The past(s) actions, does not necessarily define the present. Or the goals of VW then & now, have changed.

The 'unintended acceleration' of the Audi 5000 all but killed the brand in the US until the late 90s A4 broke through, now audi is everywhere, but that was about a 10 year span. If VW suffers the same fate again, that's a huge blow.

Yeah, that 5000 thing was a real roller coaster, from all the complaints, lawsuits, Car & Driver debunking it, and the government finally agreeing with C/D after about 5 years. That did kind of parallel the rise and fall of VW in the US market as well, with the opening of the Westmoreland plant in PA and the later closing of it.

^^^I personally wouldn't want to bet on that.^^^
In fact:
I remember one of VW's more recent "scandals"...
The one where VW "wooed" Jose Ignacio Lopez
de Arriortua, and seven other G.M. purchasing
managers, away from General Motors Corporation...
Resulting in lawsuits being filed in US Federal
District Court, and in Germany...charging these 8
defendants, along with VW, of violating Federal
racketeering statutes, Federal trademark and copyright
laws, Michigan fraud laws, Industrial Espionage, and
German labor laws---in the hiring away of these
executives; and, the theft of 20 cartons of Confidential GM documents (which, after trade secrets were gleaned: were shredded).
This is what Thomas A. Gottschalk, (G.M.'s senior
vice president and general counsel at this time),
said after the Federal Judge had ruled on the
racketeering charge:
"While G.M. was playing by the rules...
VW and Lopez were shredding more than G.M.
documents; they were shredding their ethics!"
•And...
I don't really want to get started on how another
example of disloyalty, fomented by the VW managerial
culture, resulted in its take-over of Porsche, the company.
Yes:
the pitting of the relatives of the Man, that was
delegated by Hitler to design the "people car",
against one another...

Bob you pretty much make my point. Companies will cheat "greed", so overseers are necessary.
