Re: Show us your pet.
We may have gotten around some trouble keeping him in our apt by saying he was an Am Staff Terrier…

People are so ignorant.
There was a little boy on the news just last night that got his face and arms bit up pretty bad......
By a Black Lab.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

Jeez! I'm horrified to hear a black Lab would maul someone! I had one. He was crazy hyper but never aggressive
Treat it like it's the only one in the world.

Any breed at any time is capable of any behavior. They are all animals. Responsible dog ownership is not only training it, feeding it, walking it, and loving it. It is also knowing/recognizing any situation that could potentially lead to a less than favorable outcome and stopping it before it happens.
It's just a crime that the American Pit Bull Terrier is the face of the "evil dog" in this country. They are highly intelligent (to a fault), they love kids, and are among the most trainable dogs on the planet.
If you teach it, they will do it. 1000% every time.
But it doesn't help that a certain type of person(s) train them to be something they are not and use them as fighting dogs.
For you see, if they are trained to fight, they will do that 1000% as well. All Terriers were bred by man to be tenacious in any task asked of them. And they excel at it.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.

Re: Show us your pet.
As kids, my sister and I grew up with a Blue Healer as our pet.
I remember one day, my sister started screaming from the back yard. At the time, she would have been about 5 or 6 years old, so it certainly got attention from my mother. It turned out the Layla (named after Eric Claptin) had taken a decent nip at my sister's arm. I remember my mother tying Layla up to a tree as precaution until my father came home. It wasn't Layla's fault, she was devouring a bone at the time, my sister unaware of what that meant in terms of primeval instinct. If my mother wasn't such an animal lover, I would dare say Layla would have been rehomed.
At the end of the day, we treat and love our pets like people, we look after them with all of our hearts, but you can't change what is basic instinct for the animal in question.

Re: Show us your pet.
Dogs need training, but so do people. My first dog, Benson, was the same Blue Heeler - Border Collie mix as my current dogs, but bigger. He growled at my niece once, when she walked up beside him and startled him. My sister in-law, her mother, tried to tell me that I had to train that out of him, I disagreed, I said a dog that can't growl will bite without warning. I told her to educate her daughter, to be very careful around a growling dog, to back away, carefully.
I got him when he was a couple of years old, his owners were moving into an apartment and were going to surrender him. He'd had no structure, no regular walks, irregular feeding times. He bit me once, early on, he got one of my fingers, so it wasn't too bad, I punched him on top of the head in return, not too hard, just a reflex. He ran and hid and I felt bad. So I sat in the middle of the yard and called him, it took 10 mins, but he came out looking sorry, he licked my hand, I rubbed his head and gave him a hug. He was a good boy after that, got walks every day, got structure in his life. He was happy, can you tell?

What breed was Sydney? Looks like there's a bit of Red Heeler Australian Cattle Dog in there. Very intelligent and loyal dogs.

Lots of rain overnight, but they still love their walk. 17C (64f) this morning, and she still sits in the puddles.
