Terrible, especially if it really was shot down by Russia military.

Yeah, not a good year for Malaysian Airlines. Boy I bet their insurance is going up next year!

Tragedy
Why would a passenger plane be flying over a war zone anyway?

When did it become a war zone? I thought it was just a territorial dispute...that was threatening becoming WW III. Of course, that describes half the world at this point.

Latest news saying that Russian military shot it down, mistaken it as Ukrainian cargo plane. (It might be hoax, but if this is true... How on earth they can't identify passenger aircraft from whatever #### else)

Eh, once upon a time the Russians (USSR) shot down KAL 007, from visual range--how could they mistake a 747 for an RC-135? (well, it was at night, and it was the cold war, and well...it's a long story)

The only excuse is that case was they were in Russian airspace. As I read it, commercial aircraft have been flying over Ukraine (the contest area) so they were the unlucky ones.

There are tons of instances during war time of allied nations shooting down their own planes - and bombing their own soldiers . I guess today things are supposed to be more sophisticated - but apparently not. I'm guessing the shooter is looking at some signal or "blip" on a computer screen and simply pushes a few buttons...then disaster.
In all honesty, I have no desire to go anywhere east of Poland or south of Greece - ever . There is so much conflict in those areas of the world - and the USA always gets sucked into it.
I feel really sorry for the people on that airplane and their families.
