Does it matter to you if you take your car to get service, and the tech comes out and says you need new struts because yours are blown when you know your car has shocks not struts? For some reason to me it does. I think that most people don't know the difference, but the tech more than anyone should know what they are replacing. To interchange them when they are wrong makes them sound uneducated, and if they don't know that, what else are they mistaken about.
Does it really matter at the end of the day? No, but silly things drive me nuts and that is one of them. I have said on other car forums I was never one of the kool kidz so I don't call them rims even though I do know what they are talking about, but it is slang and not really the correct term.
I am just silly with some things, saying the car in front of me needs to use its blinker or turn signal makes no difference, or turn at the red light or stop light, again who cares, rims though...ya can't do it.

Re: Wheels vs. Rims
I use them like so...
Rim = Wheel that doesnt have a tire mounted on it.
Tire = Rubber part of the (W&T assembly)
Wheel = Rim with a tire mounted on it.
Dunno why I consider it that way, I also am fine with calling the wheel a rim either way.

I'm on the rims are a part of a wheel team. This does bother me when I hear it said interchangeably.

Re: Wheels vs. Rims
To me, it's always been;
tire - round piece of rubber
rim - round piece of metal
Wheel - a round piece of metal and rubber together
Wheel set - 4 Wheels

Re: Wheels vs. Rims
I knew we would get a good discussion on this forum! I've looked up this topic before and whenever I see people discussing it then it always turns into some sort of flame war.
My big problem with it is from more of a professionalism standpoint. A good amount of us on here are professional detailers and work with a lot of car enthusiasts. How professional would it seem if we're going around using an incorrect term around a serious car nut? You might have lost some credibility with that person as a professional who takes his/her job seriously. It's the same with using incorrect grammar, things like they're/their/there and your/you're; I see stuff like this often on websites and they've immediately lost my business. Some people notice these things and if you're not going to take the time to use the words properly then how does your customer know that you're going to take the time to learn how to detail properly.
Rant over. Carry on.
