    Best Camera?

I'm looking to get a new digital camera. Not looking into DSLR, but something along the lines of the Canon Powershot ELPH, around that price point.

Any recommendations? yes, this is for a gift.

Depends on how much you want to spend, who it's for (camera experience), and how big it can be.

I find the right ones in the Canon lineup are outstanding. Some of them are lackluster though, so you have to do you research.

Personally I don't think you will find something better than a canon powershot elph 300 hs in that price range.

Here is a great site though.

Thanks for the website! That model cannon is at the top of my list currently.

It's mostly for myself and my wife (TBH mostly for her) shooting pictures of the kids growing up. Neither of us are accomplished photographers, so something simple and less complicated (than DSLR), but with good quality to last is a plus.

We've had Sony's, and our seven year old has a kodak easyshare, which is nice, and he loves to photograph.

EDIT: she was all into gettin a new Nikon One (likes Ashton), but then nearly fell over when we saw the price :P

That and you would be buying lenses depending on what you want to shoot. I would actually not recommend this camera for what you want.

The best one available in the Canon lineup is Powershot S100. If I were spending that much on a pocket cam that's what I would get. Down from there would be the 510, 310, and 300 HS, respectively. You will get better low-light shots from the S100. The others may require a flash for the same picture. Otherwise, any of those should fit the bill nicely.

I'm not sure of anything outside the Canon range. Truth be told that's all I will stick with when it comes to digital cameras.

I like the Panasonic Lumix line. They're very user-friendly and take great photos.

For the most part...most digital cameras take great pics as the technology is so good. I doubt if you'll be unhappy with whatever make you decide on. It all comes down to price/features and ease of use.

I have a Canon DSLR and find myself using the Lumix more often out of sheer convenience. The DSLR is more versatile, but in most cases the compactness of the Lumix wins out.

Fugi has some good prices. They seem to offer a lot of camera for the money.

You might really benefit from a photography course too for her. It will help her to make sure she has always focused on what she wants to actually shoot, etc. These cameras have become very sophisticated in the last few years and are capable of quite a bit if you know how to use them to their fullest extent.
