It makes your weapon a lot more accurate if you consider that in low light or no light, iron sights are useless and even night sights can be testing. I am a big fan of the Crimson Trace Grips, we have several pair installed on different pistols/revolvers.
No you wouldn't want to try to be "tactical" with them because the act of holding the gun turns them on and shows someone where you are. But generally speaking, pistols are for self defense and fighting your way back to your rifle.
In Ranger school, while practicing rifle to pistol transition drills, in the dead of night... we used ONLY iron sights on BOTH our M4's and pistols. I was on an urban door-to-door strike team in an unfriendly country and again... dead of night, no lasers. Just a good quality optic.

I agree with your other comment about learning to use iron sights and not handicapping yourself in the case of something like laser failure. I would say I fire less than 5% of my rounds with the laser turned on, and it is always best to change the batteries on a regular schedule. There is also nothing wrong with giving yourself an advantage (I think the United States is quite happy with its tech supremacy in a fight) and most people don't have 10% of the firearm training someone going through ranger school has.
Regarding the standard iron sites, if there is no light, you cannot see your standard iron sight. Now if your talking about some night sight with tritium, .
When I bought my first 1911, I was debating night sights due to cost, a friend grabbed two of his pistols and we walked outside on a cloudy night. First up, iron sites, couldn't see much of anything, second up, some tritium night sites, ahhhhhh, me want .

It's definitely not popular anymore I tried buying some ammo for the 41 it was not the easiest to find
You can say that again. The pops did a lot of trial and error with the .41 to find out a grain/powder that works well. 210 grain seems to be the winner and shoots groups on the bullseye from 40 yds, but .41 ammo is hard to find to begin with, let alone in 210 grain
