Re: New trucks
I'm a Chevy guy and I own a 2006 Chevy Avalanche. The truck is awesome! I don't tow a lot but like you I always have something in the bed. The Avalanche has a shorter bed, but the back seat goes down and the rear windsheild comes out so you have plenty of room for hauling. And it has plenty of power for towing as well. Comfortable ride and every feature you can think of.
Just my opinion!

Re: New trucks
I used to trade every 2 - 3 years, and have had Fords since 1985. Loved every one of them, except for one Ranger with the 3.0 V-6. It didn't get as good mileage as the 4.0 L, and was shifting all the time because of the under power. Started with F-150s in 04, and love the ride, room, power and looks. The new ones with the 6 speed tranny is supposed to give decent mileage, even with the 5.4 L engine. My 07 super cab 2 WD gets 16 - 18, depending on use. In town and short trip mileage is not that great, but I love the truck. Ford has some good rebates and incentives now also. Best selling truck for many years, they must be doing something right. (And Ford didn't take tax payer bail out money like GM and Chrysler did).

See my signature, you'll be able to tell what I'd buy. Only thing I would change is I'd get the 6.2L V8 instead of the 5.3L.

I have a 1967 chevy c-10 & a 2001 F-150 now,but if i had a Choice to go new or newer it would be the first generation SRT-10 Viper Truck or the 2009/10 Dodge Ram Sport hands down!

Re: New trucks
I also find I'm always needing to haul something and have been kicking around the idea of getting a truck too as I hate borrowing friends trucks all the time. Towing is not something I'd do often either.
Since I'd have to wash and park the darn thing I'm not real big on full sized trucks. Seems that the mid-sized market is shrinking too but I've really been looking at the new Tacoma's. With the factory installed TRD supercharger covered under a full 5yr/60,000 mile warranty (making 304 horsepower and 334 pound-feet of torque), I think it's what I'm leaning towards. I like the more upscale features of the Ridgeline, but it's under powered and over priced IMO...plus it's kind of ugly.
Just my $.02

Re: New trucks
I have the FX2 Sport. If I was to get a new one, I'd want the Lariat over the FX4 because of more luxurious interior and gearing that would probably give better mileage. The King Ranch or Platinum would be my choice if money were no object.

Re: New trucks
When I bought my F-150 earlier this year I did quite a bit of looking. I think all of the 1/2 ton options are pretty good, and it will come down to personal preference. I've got the crew cab 4x4 Lariat, pretty much loaded (everything but the tailgate extender), and I couldn't be happier. My second choice was the Tundra, but that was mostly because I was going from a 4Runner to the pickup and I had good experience with Toyota. The timing of the sticking gas pedal issue with Toyotas came out at the same time I was looking to buy, so that helped my decision.
