I live in a area (Philadelphia, Pa.,) that is saturated with the mobile and fixed shop car washer/detailer bug. By this I mean cut throat under sale to make a dollar, for most the passion is in the money, not skill, not products and not equipment. the average shop lease (rental fee) is well over a thousand ($1000.00) for something ok, but when folks are used to paying $10.00 maybe $15.00 shop rent money is hard to make. Being as this is part time work for me

MY 2017 PLAN
(FUNDRAISER TYPE) set up shop (MOBILE) in open spot working out of vehicle (rental van or my wife suv) with my apprentice(s). rinse vehicles with distilled water using the GARRY DEAN ECO RINSE MACHINE, wash vehicle with rinseless products and a rinseless wash media like the big red sponge (one bucket with grit guard) dry, and then clean and dry wheel face (seperate bucket) clean exterior glass/mirrors $10.00 to $15.00 may offer a light interior vacuum and wipe down and interior glass/mirror cleaning for $20.00 to $25.00 per car. Depending on how filthy the vehicle may be I'd like to get two cars out of one bucket rinseless wash, if need be i can use the two bucket method.
But hand out flyers for my more detailed services that are at my home and done by appointment only or my op to go mobile if I upgrade to a small cargo van

Being you'll be detailing out in
an open spot: Are you required
to capture the effluent/run-off?

You gotta sell yourself. Yeah, doing a waterless or rinseless wash is an "easier" method for us pro's to bring costs down, but even then is it really worth competing with them? Honestly, 99% of the people who are paying $10 for a wash, don't really care about the true look of their vehicle. They see no dirt and some shine and they're okay with that. Not really worth it to invest time and money into competing with companies catering to those people. REALLY hard to convince those people to spend hundreds of dollars on making their car look better when the next time Jonny Wash n Wax swings through the parking lot again he's gonna mess up your hard work. Especially when you're trying to market to more high-end people. Do you wanna work for free? I personally wouldn't touch a car for $10. Not worth my time or gas or money. I don't market to those people and I dont feel you should either. You have a business to run... insurance, bills, etc... are you REALLY making money at $10/wash? I have a hard enough time justifying $25 for an ECO wash for my time.

Also, I doubt many of the $10/wash people are really legit or will even be in business for the long term. Most of them are the fly by night type and will be gone before you know it. Yeah, there will always be someone else trying to make a quick buck, but realistically those aren't the type of people you wanna compete with. Don't devalue yourself or your work to "make" $10. Do you wanna do a lot of work for no money? That's what it seems you'd be doing honestly. Just my opinion.

I would you a tarp to collect run off, but would only use straight water through machine, washing product would be rinseless so that's (run off) enviornment friendly, I believe PENNDOT road (toxics)chemicals for snow and ice removal (melt) pose more of a threat to sewage run off

I'm licensed but work from my home
have better product, equipment, knowledge, and have a website (not the best but) and still struggle.
I have a regular job but do this daily (by appointment) on the side, like to have a shop but when a shop charges over a $1000.00 a month for rent and everyone is looking for that $10.00 service I just don't see it happening

Gotta find the right people man. Looks like you're trying to compete with car washers. You need to get people who are interested in YOUR services. Moreso than just a simple wash and wax. Now, if you're desperate to make some quick money then I'd say go for it. I just don't think you're targeting your niche market. Also, maybe purchase the book called "How to Start a Home-Based Detailing Business" (It's a real good read). I have been out of my house for over 3 years now and never had any issues. I've wanted a shop too but you're right, it's prohibitively expensive.

Well it depends on the mobile business model....are you going to a personal house to wash one car or setting up in a high traffic area like a mall where people are coming to you? On the right day at a mall or something a production mobile set up could make a killing

@OTSDETAIL I'll keep my upscale clientele coming to my home by appointment, those that want the simple wash (cheap) come to me at @WINDYCITY street lot location
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGLJsjkHxWI) a small operation like this but on a lot or side street quick exterior only (wash, dry, clean wheel face, exterior glass, dress tires and may be a quick detail or spray wax) or may add a quick interior if they are paying for it vacuum,interior wipe down and glass and air freshener. wash more than likely will be a pressure washer spray down, rinseless mitt wash with a grit guard bucket. or may be the foam cannon wash.
