POLL - What's the number one most important factor when it comes to polishing paint?

POLL - What's the number one most important factor when it comes to polishing paint?

    1: Technique.
    2: Tool.
    3: Pad.
    4: Paint.
    5: Abrasive technology.

    Which one and why?

Here's two recent articles I've written on the topic of abrasive technology worthy of reading....

Abrasive Technology - THE most important factor when it comes to polishing paint

Number one technique. If I had Tiger Woods clubs and he had Walmart clubs, I think he still wins. Nuff said
In my day we didn't have the Internet, iPods,iPads, or smart phones....but we had some really bad-azz cars.

It will be interesting to see what forum people think compared to facebook people.

    It's all good!

Technique. You can be a pro with a PC and some Megs products and do a kick-ass job if you know how to use them.

On the other hand, you could give a guy a Flex and the most expensive products on the market, but if he has no info on how to use them, it's useless.

I liken it to this: Go get in a NASCAR car, and try and take it around Daytona. Then let Dale Earnhardt Jr. do it with the same car. Do you think it's the car, or the technique that made the 30 second difference in your lap times? Lol

Sorry Mike, I was just opining! lol

    I still respectfully disagree.

The most important factor comes down to the product making physical contact with the paint. I've been polishing paint for a long time... I know from experience that which I speak of.

It's okay for others to think technique is the most important factor I just disagree.

I've taught thousands of people in-person how to create a flawless finish their very first time machine polishing paint. But I've always used nothing but products that use great abrasive technology.

Great analogy and I agree, however, great tools and products make it easier for pros and novices alike to get great results.

Would you use a putter off of the tee and putt with a sand wedge.

Determining what the paint "Needs" determines the Technique, Tool, Pads, etc.

    Good conversation Starter!

Exactly, but take the "think" out.

After reading your answer, it makes sense though.

I voted technique, as I understood that to mean there was some experience that backed it up. Experience in doing paint measurements, research on the type of car (i.e. cerami clear Merc's, single stage, tint-coat, clear-coat, etc..), properly taping off areas, and having an understanding of products (SMAT/DAT) and least aggressive methods.

In other words, I equated the answer "Technique" to be all encompassing.
It's just a poll and we're all having fun and learning so it's all good.

Thank you for your business and your trust. I try to write all my how-to books so they are information rich and just as important, after reading a section you have the understanding and confidence to go out to your garage and do it!

PDF Version of The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine

Just to note... I have 5 books under on the market

I'm working on 3 more books that should be ready for release in November for SEMA.

Can't share the topics just yet but I think they're going to be very popular.

I stand corrected as well. One of the biggest concerns in the SHOW CAR GARAGE and any time one is doing paint correction is BURNING through in an attempt to get out the best the paint can offer. And for that reason I said paint first and abrasive technology would have been my second choice.(Now if we only had one of those $3000.00 paint thickness gauges with the software showing every level down to the substrate...HMMMM.)
