7 Minute Engine Detailing with BLACKFIRE
The tech session at this month's Cars & Coffee (held at Autogeek's headquarters in Stuart, FL) was cosmetic engine detailing. Mike does the talking while I do all the work.
The victim: Penny's 2014 Subaru Forester. She purchased her Subaru about two years ago, and the engine has never been detailed.
Cosmetic engine detailing generally takes 10 minutes or less, and there's no fear of damaging expensive electrical components because you're not introducing water to the engine. Put it this way, cosmetic engine detailing using this new kit from BLACKFIRE is so easy that your grandmother could do it. No kidding.
Modern vehicles have engine bays cluttered with electronic components and computer modules, a far cry from the simple engine bays of yore. The traditional way of detailing an engine bay involves a heavy-duty degreaser and a strong jet of water. While very effective, you have to be extremely cautious and know what’s safe to get wet and what’s not. The average person doesn’t feel comfortable cleaning their engine bay this way, which is why we showcased this kit at our Cars & Coffee today.
In order to really understand and appreciate what cosmetic engine detailing is all about, you need to look at the BIG PICTURE:
- Your goal is not to remove grease and grime from every intricate component of the engine bay
- You're only cleaning what you have easy access to
- The engine isn't as clean as it would be using the traditional methods, but it's SAFER and EASIER
- Anyone can do it!
Introducing a kit you wished existed years ago
The BLACKFIRE Cosmetic Engine Detailing Kit is comprised of 5 components:
BLACKFIRE All-In-One Trim & Tire Protectant
BLACKFIRE All-In-One Trim & Tire Protectant Cleans, restores, protects, and beautifies exterior plastic trim and tires. Built-in cleaners remove embedded dirt from tires, including white walls. Use on tonneau covers, engine compartments, and plastic moldings. This unique formula dries to the touch and will not sling. BLACKFIRE All-In-One Trim & Tire Protectant will quickly become the most used – and arguably the most versatile – detailing product in your garage!
BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond Waterless Wash
BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond Waterless Wash in the ready-to-use spray bottle gives you a powerful ally in keeping your vehicle clean. This high lubricity waterless wash uses BLACKFIRE's proprietary Wet Diamond polymers to encapsulate dirt and dust so they wipe away with out scratching. Fingerprints and smudges disappear. Meanwhile, the anti-static polymers bond to the paint to reinforce the existing protection and create a whiplash-inducing shine.
Microfiber Applicator Pad
The gentle, yet strong fabric is wrapped snuggly around a plush, absorbent sponge. This innovative combination of materials causes wax, polish, dressings, and sealants to spread more evenly, resulting in maximum coverage while using less emulsion. It works especially well for applying BLACKFIRE All-In-One Trim & Tire Protectant to plastic engine bay shrouds and rubber hoses.
Microfiber All Purpose & Wheel Detailing Towel
Buff your wheels, paint, glass, chrome, and interior surfaces to a brilliant shine with the Microfiber All Purpose & Wheel Detailing Towel! It's paintwork-safe and the black color makes it the ideal towel for cleaning, polishing, and drying wheels and engine bays.
1” Round Detailing Brush
The handle of this brush measures 12” long so you can access the far reaches of your engine bay, even if your arms aren’t very long. The wooden handle narrows at the end so it’s very easy to control. A thick plastic band wraps around the bristles and the end of the handle to hold it all together securely. The bristles are genuine boar’s hair, tapered at the ends to allow for safe, scratch-free cleaning of glass and clear plastic. The brush’s head is 1” in diameter so you can cover more area with each stroke.
Each component plays a key role in allowing you to take the SAFE, SIMPLE approach to detailing your engine bay.
The dirty engine bay of a daily driver:
7 minutes later:
If you've never detailed your engine for fear of wreaking havoc, the solution you've been waiting for is finally here.

Mike and I demonstrated this kit live at Cars & Coffee last weekend. Yancy filmed the event - maybe if I ask him nicely he'll put something together.
