How To: Care For Brand New Microfiber Towels

How To: Care For Brand New Microfiber Towels

Microfiber towels are a must for professional and casual auto detailers alike. They are superior to other cleaning clothes because of their unique fiber composition. Microfiber consists of two materials, polyester and polyamide, which are split and blended together causing the individual fibers to be shaped like an asterisk (*). This allows the fiber to pick up and lock dirt, dust and moisture into the fibers actually cleaning and drying the surface, unlike other types of fibers. Microfiber is positively charged and attracts dust like a magnet (dust is negatively charged). It is also lint free and able to absorb 7-8 times its weight in liquid.

About: Cobra Super Plush “Junior” Microfiber Towels

    • 75/25 blend of polyester and polyamide.
    • 600 GSM. Very dense, lots of microfiber and ridiculously soft.
    • 16 x 16 inches. Great for handing when folded into fours.
    • Short pile loop side and a longer loop side.
    • Great for when softness matters the most.

    Inspection

When opening up a pack of new microfiber towels always inspect each towel thoroughly looking for any defects. Also, remove any tags, as they will scratch sensitive surfaces during use. Most tags are stickers stuck onto the towel; if the tag is sown on, do not pull the tag off, simply cut it.

    Typical Defects:

    • Edging coming apart.
    • Pulled, uneven fibers.
    • Dye Issues.
    • Holes, Rips and tears.
    • Check to see if the quantity of towels ordered is correct.

    Pulled up fibers.

Dirt or some type of stain.

    Loose extra thread from manufacturing.

    How To Deal With Defects

Often when a towel arrives in imperfect form I try my best to salvage it. When it comes to excess thread or microfiber, simply cut the excess to appropriate length and the towel should be just fine. Never pull thread or microfiber as it may start to deform or unravel the towel. If the towel doesn’t look like it was dyed properly, or has a few dirty spots wash it separately to see if that fixes the issue. Sometimes towels arrive defective and there is nothing you can do to fix the towel. If this happens simply return the towel for a replacement, quality assurance isn’t always 100%.

Cutting pulled up microfiber to make the towel good as new.

Stain or dirt came right out.

    How To Clean Microfiber Towels

Towels Ready To Be Air Dried.

Always wash and dry new towels before using and never use fabric softener or bleach when washing. It’s best to wash microfiber towels in cold to warm water only using detergent. Specific microfiber detergents are available if you are unsure if your household laundry detergent will damage your towels. Use the tumble dry or lowest heat setting when drying your towels as the fibers are heat sensitive. Quality microfiber towels are not cheap so make sure you are taking care of your investment, 500 washes is a long time.

Best Ways To Store Microfiber Towels

Be sure to fold your towels so they are ready to be used after drying. Always store microfiber towels in a covered container such as a plastic clothes storage bag (like a very large sandwich bag), in a cabinet or in a drawer. It’s best not to leave them out in the open as they attract dust and dirt easily.

Folded and safely stored microfiber towels.

    Thanks for the tips!

I've ordered a few good, quality microfibers. Amazing how much of a difference in quality those are over your typical parts store microfibers!
