I think I know where the confusion is but I could be wrong... the #3000 was introduced as a "single" pack. That is just one disc in a package for retail.
So while it may have been around in multi-packs, the single pack was a new introduction...
But I could be wrong, at least the single pack was new to us and me. It's good we hash this out though...

That would be back in May of 2012. I called my connection at 3M and he told me Autogeek was one of the first to be sent this new #5000 disc as a part of their field testing.
If it was available to the public before May then maybe my connection at 3M was out of the loop.
I knew where to locate the thread date above your avatar, but I didn't think to look at it. However, your reply 'splains' everything. LOL! One of those moments I suppose...
EDIT:
Oh...and my confusion was based only on the not looking at the thread date. O'Reily's only had the 3000 which is what Mr. Phillips posted a picture of. Don't know anything about the 5000 being found there. First place I seen 5000 was right here, and now my paint supply house carry's them also.
Sorry about derailing the thread.

I love, really love the 3M 3k Polishing Sanding Disk.
A must in any detail shop.
Few weeks back I was working on Nissan Fronter , red in color.
They had scratches all over the hood, I first used the least aggressive and worked all the way up to the WG Uber, looked much better but I could still see some scratches.
I then took out a 3M 3k disk to remove them, and that it did.
Followed up with the Uber and m205.
The results were flawless.
I'm going get the 5k today and give them a try on my next job that needs sanding.
If you ever have problems getting out really bad swirls give the 3m 3k polishing sanding disk a try, removes them quickly
Very easy to correct what the sanding disk left

I saw you had Meguiars mf system on the table. Would love to see how the d300/cutting disc does.

For #5000 grit - it wouldn't even be a challenge.
The Meguiar's Microfiber DA System is a very capable system.
