A small piece of masking tape on a light/dark plate works as well... that's the method I used and it doesn't seem to upset the balance of the plate (I use a really small one =) )

I used some correction fluid to mark my black bp! Works great as its really white!
I tried a gold marker, but it wasnt that apparent, maybe cuz my bp has a felt edge!

That would work too... anything basically to enable a person's eyes to see of the pad was rotating...
Actually, backing plate manufacturers could build a mark into the backing plate as a part of the manufacturing process.

I agree it is a easiest for eyes to detect if the pad truly rotating.
