Dampsanding with 3" Griot's Garage Mini Polisher

Dampsanding with 3" Griot's Garage Mini Polisher

    Dampsanding
This is a match made in car detailing heaven. This mini dual action polisher works flawlessly as a 3" dampsander. It makes sanding close to edges safe and easy. It makes sanding small thin panels faster and easier.

With this combination of polisher and 3" sanding disc with an interface pad for conforming to the shape of the panel you can quickly and easily sand out a minor or small defect with surgical precision in an isolated area with only a small footprint.

    Removing Sanding Marks
The Griot's Garage 3" Mini Polisher is also able to rotate the Meguiar's microfiber discs. This is a 3" microfiber cutting disc removing #3000 Unigrit dampsanding marks.

It works but it's so much faster and effective to learn how to use a rotary buffer if you're going to sand down and buff out an entire car. If you're just doing spot repair then it's doable.

I can't recommend enough getting the Griot's Garage 3" Mini Polisher

Note: Make sure you get a couple of 3" Interface Pads you want this for contours and curved panels.

I've got a few pictures of the guys from our Advanced Class using these all over the place last Sunday. I had 4 of these 3" Mini Polishers out and set up to dampsand and they were always in use.

I'll try to get some pics posted...

Does the new version of the 3" polisher have the same problems as the old one? I've been thinking about getting one, I've just read bad things about the old ones. and that finish came out great.

Here's a few pictures from our most recent Wetsanding Class, the pictures kind of tell the story...

Just a reminder, here's what the paint looked like when this 1971 GTO arrived... it has extreme orange peel...

For about a year I've wanted one but because of some negative reviews I held out... well after actually putting my hands on one and using it to polish and wetsand in the Detailing Classes, I now have one

A few more shots of the 3" Griot's Garage Mini Polisher being used to dampsand...

Orange peel and mottling near the front of the roof line...

    Close-up...

Sanded with #1500 in this picture, follow up was #3000

    Compounded...

    Not perfect but getting there...

Used the PC with 6" sanding disc for the major portion of the roof and rear quarter
panel. About 90% of the orange peel was sanded off so I snagged another 5% to 6%

Will get the other side of the roof tomorrow...

im so jealous. Wetsanding to remove orange peel and then buffing to a show car finish is my number one thing i enjoy the most. Especially on black paint, when black paint has no orange peel, it just looks so gorgeous. Im sure all the students had a blast working on this, Awesome work Mike!

Nice! but isnt that a bit too close to an edge?

I usually hand sand areas near body lines, near trim pieces and sharp edges.

It's no problem for this car. First there's a ton of clear on the paint and orange peel throughout including all the edges.

    Comfort Level
The goal of the wetsanding class isn't to make everyone an expert at hand-sanding, machine sanding and using a rotary buffer, expertise comes from experience and time, this is a one day class. For some this was the first time they had ever done any type of sanding as well as doing heavy cutting with rotary buffer.

The goal of these classes is to bring each person's comfort level with the terminology, tools, products and techniques related to the wetsanding, cutting and buffing process. Any of the students that go through this class can leave and hold an intelligent conversation on the topic of hand sanding, machine sanding and using a rotary buffer. Whether this conversation is among car buddies or customers.

If they find themselves in a position where they need to do some hand sanding or machine sanding they know what's involved including the risks and the time it will take to go from start to finish.
