Re: Hood problem - oxidation or clear coat failure?
Hi Bill, thanks for a great post, I will try to clean and compound it and will keep you updated. It has to be heat from the engine combined with UV rays/sun heat because it appears only in the center part, there's nothing on roof and trunk. btw - my paint is dark blue.

My point is that the hood might have been repainted, so how is that make a car certified when the repaint failed? I was actually thinking about going to a dealer since VW has paint/rust warranty for 120,000 miles. It's ridiculous that 6 years old car has such an extensive clear coat failure. We'll see what they say, I will keep you posted here.
Again, thank you all for insightful posts.

Don't raise your hopes. The daughters twilight metallic blue on her Ford has clear coat failure on the back side of the roof. Cleaned it up a little buffing with 205 then applied DG 601/105 and a week later with Opti-Seal. The decay continues. The only recourse is a repaint on the roof but blending is going to be a problem since there are no breaks between the roof and 1/4 panels.

Re: Hood problem - oxidation or clear coat failure?
You can try the following test to determine if it is your clear coat failure or oxidation..
You can test to see if it's your clear coat by rubbing a light color compound or polish and look for color transfer from the paint to the applicator If it starts to turn into the paint color of your car that is a sign that the clear coat is gone.
If it is oxidation (which is not too common on clear coated vehicles) it could be fixed by using a compound an or polish with a machine buff.

The car must be kept outside 24/7 I'm guessing? Is there any way to keep it out of the sun?
My truck is 11 years old and the paint looks brand new. It's mostly garaged.
