I destroyed many pads when I used a LC 5" backing plate on my GG6. Switched to the vented plate and the problem went away instantly.
I think the reason for their early demise (sometimes they only lasted 1 session) is that my cars typically have rock hard paint and would require a lot of pressure. If you have normal paint you'd probably be fine. But it sucks when you're halfway into a car and your pads suddenly become worthless. It was well worth the cost of the vented backing plate since I no longer worry about being able to finish.

Thanks for all the great tips...will definitely be stocking up on pads...I really like Mike's suggestions of having LOTS of pads and changing them more often, thereby extending their life at the same time.
