I am no engineer but I would think that there will be a point (as far as cutting down the backing plate is concerned) where the plate will no longer support the smooth interaction of the inner and outer set of gear teeth. In other words I think that some of the plate, outward of the plates gear teeth is needed to keep the plate level with the rest of the machine.

You are correct that's why you can only cut off the foam edge of the backing plate anything further in would damage the plastic .
