Backing plate
I will be purchasing a Flex 3401VRG very soon. Would I be able to use the 5 inch backing plate currently on my PC or do I need to buy one specific to the Flex.

Re: Backing plate
Specific to the flex.
Flex comes with a 5.5" plate as standard in the box with the polisher.
You can then choose one of 2 complimentary plates at extra cost.
The 4 3/8" flex plate (from FLEX itself). I didn't get this because I went with the more sensible next option...
OR.
Choose the 4" Lake country interchangeable backing plate which allows you to use 5" pads (hybrid pads would be the way to go with the FLEX)

you cannot use the backing plate from your PC, they are not compatible. the stocking backing plate that comes with the flex is 5.5" in which you can use 6.5" pads. if you would like to use 5.5" pads then get the 4 3/8 backing plate. if you would like to use 4" pads & 5" (LC hybrid) pads which have 4 inches of hook & loop (velcro), then get the 4" interchangeable backing plate system. links to both are below...
