Windshield Question

Long time Lurker with a question. I just got a new truck and wanted to wax the windshield as I don't have time this weekend to do the whole truck. Anyway, I used some of the Mckee's 37 Glass restorer and then applied Collinite 845 on top of that. I applied and removed both by hand and the windshield was clear. It has rained slightly now and the rain on the windshield while driving patterns differently in different areas. But the big thing I noticed is that when i run the wipers it streaks and then instantly clears up.

Will the streaking get better or should I do something else, like another coat? Was the 845 not the proper wax to use. Normally I use RainX, but i had read that you can use wax, so I wanted to see if it worked better.

Yeah, I've gotten wiper chatter and the distinct "hazing" when using waxes on windshields. I don't use wax on the windshield anymore. I just got some Aquapel and really like it. The wipers are SOOOO SMOOTH!

I just did a good wash with glass cleaner, followed by an isopropyl alcohol wipe down, followed by a damp microfiber. Then I dried it with a second microfiber. Then I applied the Aquapel, soaked up the excess with a paper towel, let it haze, then finished removal with a dry microfiber.

In the past, I've also had good luck with RainX when applied correctly. You want to clean windshield first (as described in my previous post). Then apply the rainX and let it haze. Let it sit for 15-20 mins. Apply a second coat without removing the first. Let it haze and sit for 5-10 mins. Then wipe and wipe and wipe with a dry Microfiber until it is clear. It's very important to start with a very clean window for max clarity (and to prevent the momentary hazing with wipers).

To be honest, I'd wet a towel pretty good with IPA to get the wax off. then go back to your rain x or Aquapel.

I use Pinnacle Black Label Window Coating. I can't say enough good things about it. It lasts a long time, beads extremely well, and it is a breeze to clean. If you look into coatings, I'd suggest buying the appropriate surface cleansing product. I honestly don't use my windshield wipers that much anymore because the water flies right off the windshield.

I found a very reliable fix that combines a few things but has resulted in perfection for me and our vehicles. Solves skipping or shuttering problems.

What you will need:

• Bar Keepers Friend. You'll find it in the cleaning supplies of a hardware or grocery. It's a cleanser of sort.
• Microfiber pad or rags (3) - 2 pads and 1 Clean MF Rag
• Denatured Alcohol
• BLACKFIRE Crystal Seal Paint Sealant or Optimum Opti-Seal - I like Blackfire and fine it better overall for paint and for this fix

Proceedure:

1. Start by washing and using a microfiber pad or a small peice of MF cut from a rag you may have with Bar Keepers Friend to scrub and strip the windshield of all the crap that is built up. This really does a great job of clearing off the debris, bugs, gum/sap, oils, etc.
2. Wipe the glass dry and then use another peice of MF or another pad and wipe it down really good with Denatured Alcohol. This will insure 100% of everything left is gone. The glass will be completely virgin and clean. Wipe it dry completely and insure it's clean and streak free.
3. Lastly, apply 2 coats of the sealers I've noted. They go on ultra thin and if you've not used them before, they are truely clear and essentially evaporate as they self level. If it's warm it will take just a minute, if it's below 50* it could take 5. After that grab a clean MF cloth and wipe / buff any excess left and you will have a completely sealed and squeak/skip proof windshield.

I've found that this technique is perfect and does not wear down easily like many other treatments. I do reapply it on a regular basis as I use both the above sealants on my car every 2-3 washes. They are so, so, so very nice and work great. Like liquid lube on your car if it's detailed and corrected. Work the same on windows.

Now the one difference you will notices is that the product does not "sheet" away water like a hydrophobic coating but it does bead up allowing the wipers to do their job without streaking or skipping.

Hope this helps you and do post back your results. I just did my wife's van and she noticed instantly that her wipers are nearly silent and seem to float across her windows.

Cool! Picked Crystal Seal up from the last sale and haven't had the chance to use it yet. Going to do the tailgate on the Forester - you know how messy things get on rear sections of SUV's/wagons.
