Meguiar's D114 Rinse Free Express Wash as an LSP Stripper?

    From another thread:

I'm not directing this at silverfox, as I excerpted this from a larger discussion, I'm asking this in general of the forum members.

Where are you guys getting this from? I know that in the promo video from the AG store with Mike Phillips, Jason Rose, and Steve Coronado, they talk about using this as a "panel wipe" to remove compound residue to check your results, and at body shops to clean the car before using a wax and grease remover for surface prep.

I have D114 but I'm having a little trouble grasping how I can mix ONR at 8oz/gallon and get a QD, but if I mix D114 at 12/oz gallon I have an LSP remover. How many of you have done this? Does it really work? How do you know? What does Meguiar's have to say about this?

We've been through the "Dawn doesn't really strip and after Dawn if you wipe with IPA you remove the Dawn and are back to beading so the sealant is still there" threads, so pardon me if I'm a little skeptical that this isn't another wive's tale in the making.

    Mike,

Will the 15:1 dilution affect wax? I know in one thread about d114 you mentioned in a strong enough dilution it could strip wax. I have been using it at 1oz to 31oz of water in a sprayer to remove bird bombs, clean wheels, and remove compounding residue for a while now but was just wondering if you guys have a recommended dilution to help aid in wax removal?

At a very strong dilution ratio, yes, it can strip wax.
But we're talking like 4:1 or thereabouts.

We recommend 256:1 dilution ratio for rinseless washing (128:1 for really dirty cars) so you probably don't need the 31:1 ratio you're using for bird bombs and wheel cleaning.

15:1 will remove residual compound and polish residue but those are much easier to remove than waxes and sealants.

    Interesting...
I use D114 for almost everything:
    Panel wipe
    Rinseless/waterless
    Bugs spray
    Window cleaner
    Carpet cleaning after meg D101
    Wheels and tire cleaner (coated)
Interior dust wipe down follow by meg QID
Leather light dirt cleaner follow by 303 AP

    I feel cheap...

The question is the word "strip". Does this mean it will remove all or just degrade?

Here's a couple more that I found on the Meguair's forum a few days ago.

D114 Rinsefree Express leaves anything behind?

Having said that, we have seen those video reviews where people comment on a boost in gloss after using D114 and quite frankly, it has our chemists a bit stumped. According to them, there is nothing in D114 that should boost gloss, yet many claim to observe just that.

Even though there's no IPA in Meguiar's D114:
It can also be used...at the recommended dilution ratios:
    as a "panel-wipe" or "LSP-stripper".

    And No:
    It doesn't mean to use Dawn;
and then follow-up with a solvent.

    :sigh: no, i mean:

when someone says full IPA replacement that could mean replace the 50 or 71 or 91% IPA we use to make our wipe down solutions. it could even mean 100% IPA.

or it could mean replace the IPA solution we commonly use, like 15-20%.

those two means could drastically change his dilution suggestion - 6:1 ready to use, or 6:1 as a 100% IPA ratio start. oh well, it's semantics that caught my eye.

    Bob,

i'll stick with Dawn and/or IPA because they work, i already have them and i can get them at a moments notice if i run out. if i need something even more potent i have Maxx Solv prep solvent. and i don't need another high tech washing solution as i'm already full of Opti-Clean, ONRWW, ONR, Reset, etc. but when they originally posted the video, it was good to find out that it can be used as a panel wipe for those who are willing to invest in yet another versatile product.

i added this to the other thread as well:

if one is cleaning fresh film, they are simply trying to remove oils, release chemicals...whatever the heck might be on there from production and installation to insure that the substrate is just the top coat of the film. when i say strip here, i mean all of that. there is no reason the film should have any waxes or sealants on top other than the factory self healing coating.

if i were trying to remove waxes or sealants, i'd use Power Clean.

i use Dawn to wash aggressively if i'm not using Reset or Power Clean, it just depends on the situation. and if i use IPA, it's because a coating is going on, esp. if i'm not using primer or the like.
