Does salt and road chemical cause rust ?

Like the title say do they cause rust ? Just seen a local detailer on the news. They were talking about dirty vehicles and the salt and chemicals effects on your vehicle. The detailer stayed that it rust your car and undercarriage. Also do any of yall clean the undercarriages of vehicles and how? He also stayed that the salt and chemicals can scratch your car, as he was whiping a dry panel with a terry cloth.

You could say they do...In a round about way.

Corrosion/Rust is the result of an electrochemical reaction combining iron and oxygen to form iron oxide.
To really get the iron-oxide party off to a good start: Bring in some "impurities" and an electrolyte.

That's where chemically-laden melted ice/snow (née: water) can come into play...can step-up the rusting process.

Now it's just lying-in-wait for something to come along and kick up some of this ion-filled road spray, into moisture-trapping crevices, in and around a vehicle.

Best to rid a vehicle of this contaminate ASAP!!

It's more like it will speed up the rusting process if it's not removed...

Metal will rust, even stainless steel, the speed that happens depends on what the metal is subjected to.

That's not good news about the calcium. I thought the good old fashion salt was bad enough!

If you have a car that has lived in the salt-less climate and put it next to a northern tier car and look underneath there will be a noticable difference, even on one that is well cared for.

To combat the effects, I spray out the wheel wells and undercarriage. This is either done by hose, coin-op car wash wand, or a touchless car wash that has an underbody spray.

Salt and such will rot a car quick. One method to use,if practical, is hook up a lawn sprinkler under the car and drive slowly ove it. Helps a little or alot depending on water pressure

Yes and yes. I just try to rinse off as much as I can as often as I can, when the temp gets above freezing.

Its obvious, look at the vehicles that do the spreading. I try to run mine through a touchless 2-3 times after the salt goes away.

There are devices you can use to clean the under side of the car--here's one 16" Undercarriage Cleaner Pressure Washer Accessory, 4000 PSI | PRI Industries, Inc. that you use with your PW.

Valeugard also is well know to supply high quality rust inhibitors, under coating and special wash products to remove Magnesium Chloride (the modern day rusting agent). Home
