ultra fine vs fine vs intermediate vs heavy swirling
is there anywhere i can find pictures comparing these? i want to make sure im buying the right product for my application.

It dont work that way. Some paints are extremely hard and some are extremely soft and a bunch inbetween.
Your best bet is to get a compound, medium cut polish and a finishing polish. Along with medium cut pad/s, light cut pad/s, polishing pad/s and finishing pad/s.

Yah, and start easy. Don't use the most abrasive stuff first - work your way up in case you don't really need it after all!!
