tape plastic then do paint or opposite

Sure are a lot of vehicles out there with the plastic, rubber-ized, vinyl-ized, exterior cladding and tall rocker panels. I speak of types like the Chevy Avalanche and the mid-90's Jeep Cherokee.
In your opinion would you prefer to (after a wash, clay, etc) dress the plastic, tape off then polish paint OR tape off plastic do paint and come back to plastic?

I'm no pro or anything, but I've always done the tyres/plastics last. I find if you use a foam applicator and some good quality tyre gel, it's easy to be very accurate on the external plastics and not get any on the paintwork.
