    Pads with Recessed Velcro---

    I've posted this question in another thread worded a little differently and didn't get answers to my question. I'm new to machine polishing and trying to decide on pads. Buff and Shine pads have the Velcro recessed from the edge of the foam and I'm leaning this way.

    Does the recessed Velcro really offer a margin of safety as B&S suggests on their website or is it just hype in actual use??

    Part of it depends on the size of the backing plate...does the backing plate extend past the velcro? Generally speaking, the edge of the pad isn't close to the paint...except if you have really curvy body lines, or around mirrors and spoilers.

    I'm not sure I would consider it the make-or-break factor in my decision of which pads to buy.

    With a 5" backing plate and the 5.5" B&S pads the backing plate does not extend past the Velcro so you have almost 1/4" between the BP and the edge of the foam. This space has no Velcro--B&S states that this is a safety advantage so you won't damage adjacent surfaces if you are polishing close and hit them with the edge of the pad. Just trying to find out if this is a real world advantage.

    I depends on the cars you are doing...on my cars the only time that there is a problem like that is hitting the mirrors if am doing a pillar or the top of the door under the mirror, or if I'm polishing in the grille/headlight area or the trunklid where you can contact the top of the bumper--perhaps.

    As I already stated, I wouldn't use this as the make-or-break feature in your pad decision. Factor in price, where you want to buy from, pad material, etc.
