Hi you guys,
I'm new to the "AG" forums.. I have that one down, but these threads are loaded with information until I start hitting little bumps with abbreviations, then I'll hit a wall when other member respond back with a flood of abbreviations. So if someone could break down ONR, QD, ONR, XMT ect... Thank you guys and gals in advanced!

It would be far easier to just spell everything out thus reducing and confusion or frustration, not to mention that they're are several products that use the same acronym.

You really think that's true? Besides the snob-appeal of knowing acronyms that others don't, there are legitimate reasons for using acronyms, such as improving reading time/comprehension, faster composition, etc.

Acronyms are derived from real words we use daily and are already committed to memory. We then create snippets that we feel save us a tremendous amount of time but what we done is create literally thousands of these little "shortcuts" that we must now remember and the definitions to.

Out brain comprehends words and data at surprising speeds. With words like "over the counter" reduced to OTC we're forced to train ourselves to translate an acronym on the fly to their root form; over the counter.

Today most here type at blazing speeds and whether we type 6 complete words ot their new three letter acronym really boils down to a second, maybe two and that's maybe.

They're just "cool" I guess but then again it gives someone an additional task of posting the contents of their secret decoder ring.

Look how many member routinely post the question; what does OTC or a variety of other acronyms mean? To me none of this makes any sense thus the reason I don't use them.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. You learn the acronym and what it "means" and you don't then disassemble it into its spelled-out form every time you read it. By the same token you would advocate ER doctors not using acronyms/abbreviations or police or military or ATC (uh oh, another acronym) not using codes in their radio transmissions because it takes longer and causes confusion?? Anyway, I understand your concern for newbs and if I feel I'm posting to someone who isn't going to understand the acronyms then I spell them out.

What I like to do is use the whole spelling the first time the phrase is used and subsequently use the acronym. This allows for understanding + brevity. However if the thread is call Ultima Trim & Tire Guard, I would feel at ease just using UTTG.
