You will be fine with the painters tape by 3m. I see people down here in FL putting it all over the fronts of their cars when big shows come up. Ill wager it will work well for you

Re: masking front end....
Its probably too late, but I would just Put a sheet over the front to protect the paint and then put either some thick paper, plastic - anything to protect it from rock impact.

The 3m is better than your run of the mill painters tape so if you go with that make sure its 3m as they are both blue. Its designed to stick better but come off cleaner. There is also some automotive specific tape out there its green don't know how it compares to 3m

I know plenty of volkswagen people that make cross country trips to shows with blue painters tape and none have had problems

A little different, but we use all different kinds of tape at our bodyshop and bake the paint sometimes over night. Even put taped up trucks outside in the sun for a few days. never had a problem with residue or anything for that period of time. Now after months we've had problems as the tape just rips everywhere.

Walmart has, (or had last year), a net you put over your front to catch the bugs, with an s-hook (plastic) to secure it by your front wheel wells. Just remember to put something under the s-hooks to prevent friction scratches under the plastic hooks.
I think I paid $4.00 for it. Drove from Mobile to Tampa and back, 18 hours, worked great.

pretty interested in this idea? have any pictures or links? tried searching but found nothing.
seems cheaper than the 3m blue tape too but if it comes to it i'll tape the front up.
