IPA wipe with terry towel caused tiny scratches

I compounded and polished my paint finishing with meguiars ultimate polish last night. It a was pretty smooth. It's 12 year old dupont clear. 5 coats cut and buffed. Ive always went straight from polish to wax but in an effort to get an even better finish, I tried an IPA wipe with the same terry cloth towels that are only used for paint and washed and stored separately. Wound up with little scratches that can barely be seen. One possibility is that some crap settled on it overnight and I wiped across it this morning.

I spent 50 dollars on Wolfgang high gloss sealant 3.0 and spritz which is high end for me and I wanted to give it the best chance to look good. Now I have to re polish. I'm probably going to skip the IPA wipe down. Anyone polish with meguiars ultimate and wipe it off and go right over it with Wolfgang?

    Thanks

Skip the ipa. I dont understand why ppl like to use that stuff. It is known thats its a terrible as a lubricant and can soften the clear up enought to leave micro marring.

The IPA might be removing some fine scratches that the polish was hiding. Get some good edgeless mf towel to do the polish removal and final wipe down. The IPA is definitely not causing your problem.

Did you cut the IPA with distilled water or use it straight. Generally Prep wipes are about 50% alcohol.

I cut it 50/50 with filtered water in a new bottle. The terry cloth towel may not have caused it, and it is totally possible that those light scratches were there and the IPA just cut out the polishing oils that were hiding them, but I really doubt it. I compounded the whole truck with a Hobo Freight Baur with an lake country orange pad and M100, then polished with the same buffer with a lake country black pad and M210. Then after the scratches I went back with ultimate polish on a black pad and "Jeweled it" then wiped it off and put on the Wolfgang high gloss sealant 3.0. That stuff is slick. I had it shining like a diamond in a goat A$$ before I put the sealant on, so I can't say it made a huge difference on appearance inside the shop. Haven't had it outside yet.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys

Definitely get some nice MF towels. I would use a panel wipe instead of iPA distilled mix as it has lubricants in it.

I think you will get better adhesion to bare paint but Autogeek does not mention using it after their Wolfgang paint cleanser in their instructions.

If it were needed I’m sure the would put it in as a recommendation. It would help them sell more product (panel prep)

I would personally use a actual paint prep (not ISP) and get some plush MF towels to get bare paint.

Read the description about Wag paint prep.

Sounds like you worked your behind off. I have used IPA cut 50/50 before I purchased a prep without any problems.
One other tip that I followed was to use several MF towels when doing the wipe down.

Some clear is soft enough that a terry or mf towel will leave micromarring. At least it's red and not as noticable as black.

No i get what your saying many have used an IPA wipe and just fine. But he is having issues. Could be totally different paint than your experience.

If you read panel wipe description like The WG link above the prep sprays have lubricants.

    IPA less lubricated like water

Thinking is would you rather wipe down your freshly polish paint with water or a detail spray?

I’m sure on some paints and great environments water would work but in all situations a detail spray would work better.

He is already having problem with his process which included IPA wipe so instead of just improving towel situation I would do it all.

Better than just repolishing…. Using more and new microfiber towels….. then back here in a week because he still has micromarring

IPA can cause marring and stiff MF cloths may incur some scratches. Sound strange but I inflicted scratches with an old MD towel, that was stiff and abrasive.

How about using some sort of prep before waxing?!?
