Ceramic Coating for Single Stage Paint
Hey guys,
I would very much appreciate some suggestions of ceramic coatings that are more suitable for a single stage paint.
Doing a paint correction on a 1995 Guards Red Porsche 993 that has single stage paint.
I have worked on a lot of cars and applied mostly CarPro CQuartz but have not done so on a single stage paint and looking for a recommendation from someone who successfully applied a similar coating on single stage paint.
Thanks in advance for your input

Coating single stage paint is often not recommended as it can appear uneven and splotchy. You will have to check with CarPro on whether or not their coatings are recommended. Gtechniq often recommends their C1 coatings. Try it on a small spot first and see how it looks days later.

the type of single stage paint.
Solvent-evaporation lacquers and enamels
If it's
OLD SCHOOL like old solvent-evaporation lacquers or enamels then you're going to be a lot better off sticking to a traditional wax or sealant and not a paint coating because these paints are porous and applying a pure polish or glaze before sealing the paint brings out the full richness of color.
Products like pure polishes and glazes tend to be oily and thus a coatings cannot make a proper bond. If you chemically strip a porous single stage paint you will dull it down and that defeats the purpose of doing any correction and/or polishing work.
Big picture is you compound and polish paint to make it
LOOK GOOD. Stripping single stage paint makes them
LOOK BAD.
Modern catalyzed urethanes
If it's a
MODERN URETHANE SINGLE STAGE PAINT then it's basically the same type of paint as a clearcoat and thus you can treat it like a clear coat so apply paint coatings to these types of paint till the cows come home.

Re: Ceramic Coating for Single Stage Paint
I've coated a few old single stage Ferrari's and Porsche's. (I use 22ple's professional offering) I prefer to wax or seal them though. Just as Guz stated, you can run the risk of them being blotchy/uneven after application.

On single stage urethane use a polishing primer as your last step before coating and you won't have any issues.

Thanks Bob. I have read this article by Mike but forgive my ignorance….
Would a 1995 Factory Original paint qualify as a Modern Urethane Single Stage Paint ?
Is there a roughly defined period when Old Fashioned Single Stage transitioned to a Modern Urathane SSP ? Thanks

Would a product like CarPro Essence or similar will qualify as a polishing primer ?
