First time waxing on used car

Hi all - bought myself a 2015 porsche cayman (gray metallic) a couple months ago and now its time to wax it. paint looks good, no swirls etc but I wonder, is the current wax/sealer even a consideration when waxing the car now? anything I should do to make sure the new coating goes on well and stays put?

    Thanks in advance

I would do a light machine polish to remove anything on there and prep the surface.

I think you'll be surprised by the improvement in the look of the paint. And you'll have a good clean surface to apply your protection of choice and maximize its durability.

What are you going to be applying? Some LSP are more finicky that others. That said a light polishing will give you a nice, fresh start.

If you have absolutely no idea what anybody’s talking about above, find a local detailer that will single stage polish the car for you. That should be a couple hundred bucks. It will so totally be worth it be before you go out and buy a polisher, product, pads etc. Then you can wipe on a sealant very easily there are millions of them that are good, all you need to do is keep reading here about several of them. Most of them wipe on ,create some sort of haze and wipe off and last six months or so , some even longer. That’s what I would do if I didn’t know anything about Detailing, because once you go down this rabbit hole,It can be a lot of time and money. Which may or may not be your style.

But yeah , to get the car looking good and have a sealant or a wax stay on the car, you need to polish it first. Either you do that or have it done. It is so totally worth it. Just like when you buy all unpainted furniture, you don’t just stain or varnish it, you sand it first. Same applies here.

    Nice used car.

    •After the proper “prep”:
-A coat of Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint
Sealant (DGPS) would bring out the
best this metallic has to offer, IMO.

Not impossible, but I find it hard to believe that anyone could buy a used car, 6 years-old, and the paint not needing to be polished.

There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

At a minimum I would give it a baggie test to determine whether or not a chemical decon and claying is necessary, then finish with a quality AIO. Whatever LSP is on the car currently would be of no concern.

My car is the exception : 11 years old, never any defects so no polishing. It is kept under extraordinary conditions and after all, this is me we're talking about. Im a total nut.

Thanks all, i appreciate the advice - I especially appreciate glen e's comment about the depth of this rabbit hole , I've been planning on getting a polisher anyway to do some correction on my long neglected toyotas - I'll do a baggie check and see where I'm at, based on the condition of the car overall I think the previous owner was like Bill D. Part of why I bought the car. Sounds like a polish and a coat of Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant is the way to go. Again many thanks for the advice.

I’m very glad to hear the previous owner was like me.

With the Wolfgang, sounds like the car is going to continue to look real good!
