For the ergonomics I can absolutely see a benefit with a D-handle. On a rotary polisher if you going up on a little edge both the D-handle and the side handle can be a benefit to use it. I think it's much of what you get used to when starting to polishing or getting used to for a better ergonomics. Some handles can be savior for you with reduced vibrations. I say go with what works for you and if you have problems with it just adjust that or make another change for the better for you.
